Question: I just received a call from a person who had a handgun stolen 20 years ago. The police recovered and returned it to the rightful owner. However, the owner says that the serial number had been filed off, yet the police were able to lift the serial number with their technology. I understand that it is illegal to possess a firearm with an obliterated serial number. I have not seen this firearm yet to know if the number is still visible to the naked eye. If the number is slightly visible, is there any scenario where this gun would be legal for them to own?
